Fortune Yaohua is a kindergarten in the Pudong district of Shanghai.  It received its P4C Advanced 4Cs School status in May 2018.

Fortune Yaohua Kindergarten (FYK) has been practising P4C for several years and achieved its P4C Bronze Award in 2017.  A high proportion of teachers have done P4C Foundation training and the P4C Leader has done Facilitator Development training.  The school has established a P4C leadership team and appointed an effective P4C leader to champion the development of P4C program.  The headteacher is actively involved in developing P4C.  Plans are in place to continue this development to P4C Model School status through 2018/19.

Strategically, the school has adopted P4C to develop the children’s thinking skills and self-expression, to enhance teaching skills, to encourage school-home cooperation and to support the school’s 11 core values.  P4C is regularly timetabled in Pre-K, K1 and K2 and has started to migrate into other areas of the curriculum.  FYK has a well thought-out progression of P4C learning across its three year groups.     

The level of commitment to P4C is strong.  As well as the continuing investment in P4C training and the regular timetabling of P4C, there are monthly P4C review meetings for each age group and an admirable willingness to share practice between teachers.  The school participates in the Fortune Kindergarten’ P4C Leadership Group to share practice with other schools, including the leaders of the Fourth Education Department of Pudong New Area.  It has also taken part in the Xiehe Education Group Research Center P4C action research project.

The school has an effective approach to reviewing the practice and impact of P4C including comprehensive quantitative analysis of the impact on various areas of the children’s learning.
