SUIS Hongqiao Primary Years IB School

SUIS Hongqiao received its 4Cs School award in May 2018.

SUIS Hongqiao is an International Baccalaureate (IB) school offering the PYP (primary years programme). It is an inquiry-based, concept driven curriculum with an emphasis on students developing the attributes of the Learner Profile (10 attributes: caring, thinker, inquirer, communicator, reflective, knowledgeable, courageous, balanced, open-minded and principled).  In looking at the 4 C’s within the P4C programme (caring, critical, collaborative and creative thinking) we feel it is particularly useful to enhancing programme implementation.  We feel that there is a strong connection between P4C and the IB programme and want to deepen our programme and enhance student thinking.  The rationale to have the programme is to also strengthen teaching quality through empowering teachers to become strong facilitators of student learning.

The evaluation report said:

"Both IS and LS streams started P4C in 2013, and have offered P4C Foundation training to staff since 2015/2016.  The IS stream is an IB PYP school.  It is using the strong connection between P4C and the IB program and values to deepen learning and enhance student thinking.   In the LS stream, P4C is linked to moral and values education and inquiry based learning.  In both streams the ultimate goal is to create global citizens of the world who will make a positive difference.

Both schools have trained a high proportion of teachers, with 151 teachers having done Foundation training in total.  This means the school has one of the largest cohorts of P4C trained teachers in the world.  P4C is regularly timetabled across all age ranges up to grade 5, and is showing early signs of migrating into other curriculum areas.

The level of commitment to P4C is exemplary.  As well as the substantial investment in P4C training, there is an outstanding program of monthly CPD sessions and an admirable willingness to share practice between teachers.  The P4C leaders deserve particular mention for the dedication they have shown in supporting the teaching team as a whole."
